Our Story

At Dante, we believe Italian cuisine is rooted in more than recipes—it is a way of life. It is found in the generosity of the table, the respect for quality ingredients, and the moments shared with family and friends.

Dante's owner Karim’s journey began in Livorno, a coastal city in Western Tuscany, where he was raised by his Italian family just steps from the Mediterranean Sea. His childhood was shaped by the rhythms of Italian life: mornings by the harbour, fresh seafood brought in by local fishermen, vegetables grown at home, and long meals where family and friends gathered around the table.

It was around that table that Karim developed his appreciation for Italian hospitality—the belief that food has the power to bring people together. As a young man, he began working in his uncle’s restaurant, sourcing seafood each morning from the small fishing boats along the coast and learning the importance of seasonality, craftsmanship, and respect for ingredients.

His passion for hospitality later brought him to London, where he studied Hospitality Management and refined his skills working in Michelin-starred restaurants in South Kensington and Mayfair. There, he combined the traditions of his Italian upbringing with the discipline and precision of world-class kitchens.

Today, Karim brings that journey to Ottawa, creating Dante as a reflection of the Italian traditions that have shaped his life.

Alongside his wife and their two sons, he continues to celebrate and share the culture that has always been at the heart of his family—speaking Italian at home, preserving traditions, and passing on the same appreciation for food, connection, and hospitality that he experienced growing up in Tuscany.

What began as Karim's vision of sharing authentic Italian cuisine and hospitality has quickly become one of Ottawa's celebrated dining destinations.

Since opening in 2025, Dante has been honoured with Faces Magazine's Best New Restaurant award, featured by Edible Ottawa for our handmade pasta, and highlighted by CBC and CTV.

We're deeply grateful to our guests and community for embracing our story and look forward to continuing to bring the spirit of Italy to Ottawa.

Benvenuti—welcome to our table.
